New soccer cleats can create hot spots when the boot shape, foot movement, moisture and repeated friction are not yet working well together. The solution is not to force a painful break-in. Start with fit, then introduce the boot gradually and pay attention to where movement occurs.

Start With the Correct Cleat Fit

A grip sock cannot fix a boot that is the wrong size or shape. The heel should sit securely, the forefoot should not slide excessively and the toes should have enough room to move without repeatedly striking the front of the cleat.

If the boot feels painfully tight while standing still, adding a thicker sock or over-tightening the laces is unlikely to solve the problem.
